The asset
Solar without a battery just sells cheap into a saturated FiT. A battery time-shifts your generation into the evening peak, and that’s where the wholesale market pays.
Why a battery, why now
Three things changed in 2025–26: feed-in tariffs collapsed to 4–6 c/kWh, evening grid rates pushed past 50 c/kWh, and the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program landed on 1 July 2025. On our modelling, battery payback for a typical home now falls in the range of 5 to 7 years on self-consumption alone, and a wholesale-passthrough plan can add roughly $1,000 to $2,000 a year on top. Both are modelled estimates that vary with your usage, tariff and system size, and are confirmed in your written proposal.

The stack that makes it work
The federal battery rebate cuts the install cost upfront. STCs cut the panel cost upfront. And from the day you switch on, a wholesale-passthrough plan dispatches your battery against the AEMO 5-minute price, charging when the grid is paying you to take it, selling when it’s the most expensive thing in the country.
Cheaper Home Batteries Program
up to $4,000
≈30% upfront discount on installed battery cost, applied at point of sale via the Clean Energy Regulator’s STC mechanism.
Small-scale Technology Certificates
$2,500–$4,200
Panel-kW based discount, varies with STC market price and your STC zone. Assigned to Sunnn at sale.
Battery arbitrage
$2,240–$2,530/yr
Modelled annual income from a 20.88–27.84 kWh CQ7 stack dispatched against the AEMO 5-min spot price in NSW on a wholesale-passthrough plan.
Solar + battery bill saving
$1,800–$2,800/yr
Standard self-consumption savings before any wholesale arbitrage, on a 10 kW + 20.88 kWh system in metro AU.
Federal CHBP and STCs are administered by the Clean Energy Regulator under the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Act 2000. Wholesale arbitrage figures are modelled on a wholesale-pass- through retail plan; actual outcomes depend on usage shape and spot price volatility. Final install pricing is confirmed in your written quote.

“Got there in the end. Everything seemed to get in the way but James worked it out. He seems very knowledgeable and quick with a response or a fix. Ready to play at the power supply game now. With my existing solar system I was averaging costs of $120 per month, mostly connection fee. Now I'm excited to see I'm getting paid to supply power to the grid and getting free electricity.”

“I purchased a 42kw battery from Sunnn, they were a pleasure to deal with and offered the best deal in the market. With the three hours of free energy per day, i can virtually fully charge the battery and fulfill all my homes power requirements... incredible.”
